we're apathetic as hell and we're not going to take it any more
A few years ago I was rung up by a researcher for Richard and Judy's afternoon show on Channel 4. Would I come on and talk about Live Aid? I said I was busy at the time. They kept ringing me. Eventually they offered payment and a car to take me back and forth. You can always tell a programme's budget by the cars they send. If they're driven by a middle-aged man in a suit, the interior smells of air freshener and today's papers are in the back, there's money involved.Never having watched Richard and Judy I didn't know how they did things and when I got there I was surprised to find I was one of three people who had been brought in to contribute to an item that was five minutes long at the very most. In the ensuing discussion I managed to get away one sentence and I'm not generally crippled by shyness. Even in that brief exposure it was clear that the show was its own reality. Guests, who tended to be served in batches of three, were there to bolster the main point of the programme, which was looking at Richard and Judy. The outside world existed largely to give them something to raise their eyebrows at. Afterwards I was given a "goodie bag", containing, among other things, an autographed picture of the golden couple. It was like spending an hour on a planet whose hierarchy was completely unfamiliar and yet rigorously observed by the natives.Six months ago they left Channel 4 and took their programme to digital channel Watch. Noting the weakening of the old channels they obviously felt that the new digital landscape would afford them opportunities to make some serious money as performer/producer/rights owners. It wasn't as easy as they thought. Yesterday they ran up the white flag and tore up the contract six months early, noting that their old audience had found it difficult to follow them to a small channel. In TV circles they gleefully point to one show which only managed 11,000 viewers.Maybe this proves that while TV fame may spread very wide it doesn't go all that deep. It could also encourage the networks to face down some of their more demanding talent. If these people want to take their talent out into the marketplace and deal direct with the public they may find that they're nothing like as bankable as they imagine. And if they have to go back it will be on much reduced terms.

Missile Defense Secrets Sold on eBay
Missile Defense Secrets Sold on eBay: "Details of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system used to shoot down ballistic missiles using a hit-to-kill approach are found on a computer sold through eBay.Another day, another cyber-security concern. In today's episode, a used computer bought on eBay contained highly sensitive details of a key U.S. missile system designed by defense contractor Lockheed Martin. Among the data found on the legally purchased computer were details of test launch procedures, blueprints of facilities and sensitive personal data on Lockheed Martin employees. The discarded data is for a system known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), a U.S. Army project to shoot down ballistic missiles using a hit-to-kill approach. The project began under former president Ronald Reagan's 'Star Wars' Strategic Defense Initiative in the 1980s. The computer has been turned over to the FBI.According to the Guardian, the computer was purchased as part of a joint research project by three universities to document the risks of carelessly discarded computer equipment. The schools involved in the research include Longwood University in the United States, Glamorgan University in the United Kingdom and Edith Cowan University in Australia."The Department of Defense's standards for disposal of used computers requires the hard drives be wiped clean."From the point of view of espionage, knowing who is working on a project is tremendously useful," Peter Zimmerman, emeritus professor of science and security at the Department of War Studies at London's King's College, told the Guardian. Glenn Dardick, assistant professor of information systems at Longwood University in Virginia, who helped analyze the data on the computer, added to the newspaper, "If this is out there, then it does beg the question: what else is out there?"Lockheed Martin declined to comment on the issue.

Bottling Day
Today was brewday for my third batch, an American Dark Wheat ale. This one is going to come out very interesting. Its extremely dark. In fact, it looks about as dark as my stout, if not darker. I ran into 3 issues. The first, after steeping the grains, I realized I had too much water in the pot. I let it boil for about 20 minutes or so to boil down some of the water before adding the extract. The second issue was my first boilover. I turned around for about 10 seconds after it returned to a boil and it was everywhere. Luckily, it stayed mostly on the stovetop with a tiny bit that dripped over the front (thank god nothing went over the side). The rest of the boil was uneventful. The third issue is probably the biggest, and hopefully wont ruin the beer. I pitched the yeast before aerating the beer and then aerated it. I then realized my mistake. I opened it back up and took some beer for my gravity reading. I really hope this wouldnt have screwed anything up. I really wanted this one to be good. Other than that, everything went well with brewing. I also bottled my second batch, the Chocolate Oatmeal Stout (which I named The Chocolate With, after the Phish song The Curtain With). That went pretty well. I ended up with 3 22 oz bombers and 38 12 oz bottles. After a mishap upon opening a bottle of the Alt during which the top of the bottle snapped off, I think in the future, I am going to stop using Anchor bottles. They seem to be a bit thinner and more fragile than the other bottles Ive used. Its all fine and well because Anchor costs more anyway. Now I need to drink more commercial beer to collect more bottles for the Dark Wheat Ale.

You can never retire from being a parent...
I have a 25 year old son and a 23 year old daughter. They are legally adults. They both live on their own and both have finished school.
You would think I could retire as being a Dad.
You can never retire.
My daughter calls me and tells me some 33 year old friend of my mine has been IM'ing her about wanting to take her out for drinks about how he's really missed her and doesn't want to see their seven year friendship fade away.
This guy is also engaged to be married.
My daughter first doesn't even remember this guy - she was in his company once and she was a little intoxicated. She's saying he's hitting on her via IM and what should she do?
She mentioned the fact that he was engaged to him and he said, well we really haven't set a date yet so it's not that big of a deal.
Boing! Oh... there went another gray hair.
She turned the guy down politely though... but Geez-Louise. A friend of mine, albeit one almost 20 years younger than I am is hitting on my daughter.
Sighs... where's my blood pressure medicine.
Do your kids give you gray hair too? If so, how?

Desci asks and of course I comply. She names Point Blank as one of the great video games of our time and I agree with her. But what others have taken my fancy over the years? Plenty. Especially on the home computer, but todays list is about the ones I fed my 20c or $1 or $2 coins into over the years. In no particular order I give you my favourites. Point Blank As Desci says this is a lot of fun. No storyline of any kind, just skill tester after skill tester with a nicely ramping difficulty curve. There were times when I was on song that the single shot missions like the falling leaf or the William Tell were a piece of piss. Others where they were nigh on impossible and I blame dodgy calibration for those. Gyrus This was the first one I was any good at. I even made it to Earth once or twice. Double fire was king here as it was in Galaga and you needed to base your play around getting it. The soundtrack was pretty cool too. Gauntlet This game had a near endless appetite for coins. Mistakes made on any given level could counteracted by sticking in another couple of credits. I liked playing the Valkyrie which, in hinsight, was foolishness. All the best players would fight for the Elf and take the Wizard if that were already taken. Dont shoot food is sound advice for any situation. Moon Patrol I was never very good at it. I would get lazy and complacent in playing it. But I would always want to play it. I think it is the catchy game music that kept me coming back. I had it as my ringtone for several years in the early part of the century. Spy Hunter Another catchy tune and an impressive looking cabinet to play at. Machine guns, smoke screens, oil slicks at the ready. I almost wished I had a tuxedo to wear while driving it to get the full spy feel. Super Sprint This may not make too many lists of other peoples favourites, but if you could find a friend (or two) to play with it could be awesome. There was steering wheel lock, like so many of this era, so you would spend the race with your foot to the floor spinning the wheel hard to make the turns then grabbing it to straighten out again, drifting like crazy around the track. Star Wars The sit down version of this came to Mildura and was the first premium game that demanded 2

New Arrivals
2009 continues to present challenges. As well as ongoing funding issues, new parrots come in daily it seems. Most arrive with no commitment to their financial needs and some have health issues. Reuben Macaw is in poor condition. His feathers are picked almost bare in many places. His beak shows chalky areas and generally he seems to have experienced poor nutritional and environmental conditions. Wendy told me his estimated age - about ten I as I recall. Kolbe is a two-year-old African Grey. His feathers are over-groomed to nothing, and he is extremely nervous around people. When he first arrived he cowered high in a corner of his cage. But, within just a few days he is gaining confidence. Wendy reports that he is switching to the new food very quickly, and has been playing in his cage and even hanging upside down. That's a great sign! Remember you can contribute to the Virtual Adoption of any of our birds through the donations page. The average cost per bird is $500/year, but any donation helps immensely. Thanks again for checking in on us! Original post blogged on b2evolution.

What are the things that you can be proud of your parents?
Despite the fact that there are some things i don't agree with my mom on how she raised us up siblings. but i am still proud of her because she is a very family oriented person. she always saved money for the family. she tried hard before to make ends meet. there were sleepless nights and non stop work at her job and at home she does not seem to get tired. that is what i think i didn't get from her . her undying energy . though she kind of old now about 68. she still has this energy like before. she worked non stop. still she beats on that one.

WHY I DISAGREE with Mothers' Day
THIS IS NOT a referral, nor a statistical quotation or anything like that... statistics don't agree, but it is said that just about every woman went through a difficult time before she became a Mother. Unfortunately, some are still haunted by those dificulties, but they ARE Moms today. I love you all. Many people don't stop to think about what it means to be a Mom, but I do, and I appreciate you... that is, those of you who ARE good Moms, and I respect you for it, more than I can say. A Mother is such a special creature... A Mother is a "mini-picture" of GOD!!! Out of their innards come out living beings!!!
A TRUE MOTHER woman has capabilities to feed and hold a Baby in ways that the strongest and most skilfull men cannot.
MOTHER'S DAY SHOULD NOT exist, but Mother's Day should be EVERY DAY; and children should honor them above all things, especially when fathers are off to hunt or do battle!!!

The boy who couldn't stop dreaming
Realmente bueno. Descarga acá: Club 8 - The boy who couldn't stop dreaming (2007) (zshare)Club 8 - The boy who couldn't stop dreaming (2007) (megashares)Ve acá también el video de "Whatever you want", primer single del disco.

Energy and climate change of Meltdown
What to do?EVERYONE is green now, at least in theory. A warming planet has panicked the world into looking for alternatives to fossil fuels even as billions of people begin to achieve the sort of luxurious Western lifestyle that will, without reform, cook the Earth. If the science of climate change is fast-moving, the politics are even faster, with a huge array of treaties, promises, pledges and targets giving the appearance of lots of actionbut with little actually being achieved. Three books take very different approaches to sizing up the problem.Anthony Giddens, a professor at the London School of Economics, is a sociologist most famous for developing the Third Way, the centre-leftish political philosophy espoused by Tony Blair and Bill Clinton. His book argues that the scale of the climate-change problem and the difficulty of reconciling greenery with development demands a new political approach. ...

Hedge Funds Use Emerging-Market ETFs to Add Risk
By Michael PattersonMarch 27 (Bloomberg) -- Emerging-market exchange-traded funds attracted $1.6 billion of net inflows in the week ended March 25, signaling hedge funds are using the securities to “quickly raise risk levels,” according to Bank of America Corp. The inflows into ETFs, which trade like a stock and allow investors to make bets on whether indexes will rise or fall, were the most in about three months, Michael Hartnett, Bank of America’s New York-based co-head of international investment strategy, wrote in a e-mailed note today, citing data compiled by research firm EPFR Global. Hedge funds and individual investors are typically the most active traders of ETFs, he said. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index, the ETF known by its EEM ticker, jumped 21 percent this month as developing-nation stocks rallied on speculation government efforts from Washington to Shanghai aimed at unlocking credit markets and reviving economic growth will succeed. The emerging-markets ETF almost doubled gains in the SPDR Trust, which tracks the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index and is among the most actively traded ETFs. Hedge funds lost an average 19 percent last year, the industry’s worst returns since Hedge Fund Research Inc. started tracking data in 1990, as equity markets tumbled the most since the 1930s. The losses contributed to a record number of hedge- fund liquidations, with about 15 percent of the industry’s offerings disappearing, data compiled by the Chicago-based research firm show. Equities rallied worldwide this month after the U.S. Federal Reserve said it will begin buying debt to reduce borrowing costs, while the U.S. Treasury unveiled a $1 trillion plan to purchase toxic assets from banks. China said its economy will rebound as a 4 trillion yuan ($585 billion) stimulus package takes effect. The emerging-markets ETF slid 2.8 percent to $25.63 as of 1:25 p.m. in New York, bringing its decline over the past 12 months to 43 percent. The SPDR Trust, known by its SPY ticker, lost 1.4 percent to $81.93. To contact the reporter on this story: Michael Patterson in London at mpatterson10@bloomberg.net.

Do you still use a wall calendar?
I have one on my bulletin board in front of me. Today I flipped it to the current month after not noticing that it was still back in March....I hardly use it. I have two daily planners in my desk drawer that I use to record my future plans. There is always some place on tv or the computer that gives you the date and time. I recieved about four calendars this year but have only one up.

Does music affect your driving?
Sometimes I find I drive faster with fast music on, I dance in my seat and drive quickly, not really speeding, but faster. It probably isn't a good thing, but I feel I am also paying more attention to things, I enjoy driving more. Slow music makes me drive calmly, but this doesn't mean I'm driving better, just slower. Maybe my reactions are then slower. I wonder what is best.
Dealing with bird poachers ‘my little way’
This is a short account of some of my personal experiences with bird trappers and how I dealt with them in exchange for freedom of the birds caught and perhaps saved some poachers from falling foul of the law.1. When to approach a poacher/trapper and when not to do so:Each situation is unique. Usually a poacher or trapper is a male and if he is found in a somewhat deserted environment or he looks a rough, tough sort of guy and I happened to be birding alone, I would avoid eye contact and make for a quick exit as though he wasn’t there. I would be hiding in some bush or undercover and looked to photograph his identification. Such as, his mode of transport, his face profile, in the act of setting up traps or with the poached bird. Photography is great as it shows the official time and date the image is taken. Confrontation with a poacher or trapper that compromises my safety is the last I want to be embroiled in. 2. My identification and who I represent:When I bird alone, which I prefer to do a lot, I would usually adorn a prominent identification tag that shows my name and the society I belong to. This is so especially when I visit the villagers for it gives them the assurance that I, as a lady birder, am there to watch and study birds only and come with good intentions. The villagers usually reciprocated well with a warm welcome. This identification tag no doubt small, says it all with no further explanation needed to justify oneself. It is also effective to ward off the guilty conscience, ill intended ones who fear to confront me at the sight of the tag, regardless of whether the poacher or trapper can read or not. I make a point to wear the tag with confidence and uphold myself to be a good representation of who I belong – no different a feeling from school days when one puts on a Prefect’s badge, wears a Prefect tie and adorns a School Prefect’s blazer and lead by good examples. This method saved two juvenile water birds from the cooking pot that I found in fishing net of a tractor driver, ploughing the fields. He saw a lady approaching him with a scope, binoculars and an identification tag round her neck. A friendly discussion issued. I took some opportunity identification shots. He meekly surrendered the Watercock (Gallicrex cinerea) (above) and Slaty Breasted Rail (Gallirallus striatus) (bleow) and we gave the birds freedom. 3. Advise with visual aid - Copy of Wildlife Protection Laws:Approaching any trapper or poacher is always done at own risk and I make a point to weigh it well that I am confident to approach the trapper in a friendly way and able to win him over with friendly advice for his sake. The use of a Copy of the Wildlife Protection Laws by flipping the pages, standing beside him to make sure he sees all those listed protected birds (above). Big words, penalty and jail sentences that confronts him is enough to shrink his pupils. The result is promising with young trappers who on one occasion thanked me for briefing him and left never to be seen again. (A Copy of the Wildlife Protection Laws can be had in any state library of Malaysia for a small photostatting fee).4. Report to relevant authorities with proof of photographs: Photographing trappers and poachers are best done discreetly without their knowledge as the fear of them being reported to, drive poachers’ nuts and they will not hesitate to become verbally and physically abusive to defend themselves. (Their strategy of attack is best form of defence). Having obtained all the evidence I required, the Branch Chairman of my Society is informed and all information required with photographs are posted to him to make a quick report to the Forestry Department. The recent prompt action by Enforcement Officers in the Forestry Department to remove mist nettings found in the vicinity of the rare vagrant visitor, Common Hoopoe (Upupa epops) in Penang State is an example of good and effective co-ordination from prompt reporting, action and follow through. It is a good feeling to know, the Common Hoopoe is saved from potentially flying into the net (below). The rare bird was seen again after the mist nettings were removed- two days after my reporting. As I mentioned, it is only a personal account of what I do in small ways to save birds single-handedly. Others may do better in their different ways - their way. Some may say, I try to police others or impose others to think my way or whatever code of birding conduct I may drum up and call them ethics to dictate to others. Say what they will, I am only answerable to the call of birds that continue to reward me with numerous rare sightings and fellow birders who truly love, respect and care for the avian of the wild have all my due respect. Why being "good"is bad?
Do you ever comes out in your mind that you're so good to your friends, family, your boyfriend or gilfriends and to other people that you forget to be good to yourself? I wonder if you have ever experiences it that despite of all the efforts and too good to be true. You find yourself being sad and abuse. You feel that you are not being compensated and only few makes an effort to thank you. However, despite of this, you don't focus on it and decides to go on with your life. But, despite of this, their were times you asked yourself you felt being left behind. They only recognize your goodness when you have something to give. When is goodness becomes bad?
